I may be wrong but I imagine it might be more useful to think (and ask questions) in terms of emulation of general characteristics such as overall system speed and graphics resolution. Unless your application is not a typical desktop application, it won't care if the host CPU is AMD or Intel, it won't care if the disk is SCSI-UW2 or SATA, it won't care if the graphics adapter is an nVidia 8800 or a Radeon 5700, it won't care if the Mouse is a Logitech G9X USB or a MS Intellimouse 1.1 PS/2.

Given the incredibly vast numbers of distinct hardware products that have appeared in "old desktop PCs" since 1981 it is unsurprising that only a very few of the more common and recent products are emulated. The few virtualization tools I have used offer only a limited palette of hardware options.

You usually have to manually tweak the produced VM image to use the drivers for whatever hardware the virtualization software provides. There exist P2V tools to create VM images from existing (physical) systems but so far as I know, these do not take any account of existing hardware.

:) so if in windows and need a quick look at linux you start the VM and if you plan all the day on linux, boot on linux If it is too slow, you can delete it and go for the dual boot system. mainly with a dual boot machine.Īnyways, the good point of the VM is that you can try without any risk.

Going this way, I would install a regular Ubuntu, not wubi but that's only because I think better to have a standard install so you find more community help, how to's, etc. Your ubuntu will still use the NTFS partion without problem (with regular install or wubi) but you'll have to choose at startup and reboot to change. If you have not enough RAM, you will need the dual boot option but that's not as flexible.

I think the VM option is good if you have sufficient RAM available (1GB free while using Windows to allocate 1GB to Ubuntu VM). You can't see the difference between accessing NTFS or ext (linux) partition. Most cheap USB sticks do not have good write performance and I would recommend paying for a higher end one that lists good write speeds or even put it on a portable external SSD.Īccessing the NTFS (Windows) partition from linux is fast. Your biggest limiting factor in both setups will be the read and write speed of the USB drive you put your VM image on. You then you just need to reboot the computer you want use and boot in to your Live CD/USB and start up your VM, you will be the "administrator" of Live CD/DVD's OS so the VM software can use the low level drivers that will get you good performance inside your VM. What you will need to do is make a Live CD/USB with VirtualBox or other similar Linux VM host software pre-installed on it and also have your VM on a portable USB drive (it can even be the same drive that you are booting from). This can be easily done without making any modifications to the computer if the computer you are using supports booting from USB or the CD/DVD drive. If there is no VM software already installed in the Host OS you will need to replace the Host OS. For example if VMWare player was already pre-installed on a machine you could easily move your VM on and off the machine making it portable, and you don't need admin privileges to add or remove the VM from the player software. Without admin privileges on the Host OS it will be very difficult to get high performance from your Guest OS unless the system was already pre set up to let you start your portable VM image as a non administrator.
